Web Pages which the press could access from the press center of World Youth Day were filtered at least until  Aug. 16, stern.de-reporters wrote. They wrote that WYD speaker Matthias Kopp could not name the criteria of the filtered pages. Not only pornographic pages but also the web pages of organisations like "homosexuals and church" (Homosexuelle und Kirche) could not be reached.
On Aug 19, Kopp has denied in a press statement that web access was censored. He stated a "software by Siemens" was used to block pages with racist or pornographic content and e-commerce sites, but that the a list of words for the filter had apparently also blocked some other pages - a mistake that was according to Kopp abolished "days ago". stern.de had reported that in contrast to the filtered pages in the press center, on the WYD terminals in the internet café for pilgrims, everything that is on the web could be found and read - from Nazi-propaganda to porn and pope-critical pages which the press should obviously not be able to read.
