9 Mio.

Not 68 million hits but 9 million page impressions... this is the significant statistical number of activity (during around 1.65 million visits) on the WYD website from Aug 1until Aug 23, 2005.
WYD keeps publicising the much  higher - but senseless - number of "hits" on all objects like pictures and buttons, reviving in a mood gigantism a frequent error from the early years of the web.

After the end of the World Youth Day, WYD Ltd. has published figures about almost everything. The number of pilgrims or the number of kilometers the WYD cross has travelled. Not included in the list is the number of registered pilgrims without a visa.

When Cologne author Christian Gottschalk heard that a colleague had sold his official blue WYD bag in  an ebay auction for 80 Euros, this got stuck in his mind. Authors, especially freelancers, always do need additional cash. Lateron Gottschalk heard a pilgrim from Kenia on TV saying the church's prohibition on condoms was a good thing. This stuck in his mind too. And after a while he had an idea: Make a charity auction with World Youth Day bags with all the money going to a project for AIDS orphans in Africa.

little dog on a police motorbike taking care of the Pope's securityDespite their reputation of being highly systematic and organised, the German authorities during World Youth Day are learning the art of improvisation.  Be it traffic, the pilgrims' food or the organisation of the media: It's all but smooth.  The highest risk will be on Saturday and Sunday, when the 405,000 registered pilgrims have their accomodations taken away to be sent overnight to the open space at Marienfeld. With between  39 and 51 percent probability of rain forecast at the moment.

Finally, the little War on an Issue, it's the Condom! PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 17 August 2005
ImageAt WYD Toronto "Pro-Choice" and "Anti-Abortion" groups had demonstrations. And now, finally WYD cologne has an issue like that which can be fought over in the streets.

It is "pro-contraception" versus "pro-abstinence".

Pro-Condom activists had a press conference for the use of condoms criticising the church for its official anti-contraception that they hold partly responsible for high HIV/AIDS-rates in catholic-dominated countries. And they put up posters in the subway stations with slogans like "Abstinence has a high failure rate".

Now, the other faction has stricken back - attacking the posters.

WYD hotel booking partner HRS is still paying for banner ads on the internet to attrackt customers. Even though 400,000 pilgrims have flooded the city in the past few days, hotel rooms are still available in Cologne, and even to a reasonable price, HRS-employees told us. The hotels were not asking for higher rates, taking the special kind of clients into account who were coming to Cologne on this occasion.
